The sound of the shofar blown during Rosh Hashanah is the ultimate wake up call. At this time of year we do our own personal accounting and look deep into our own lives. We also direct our attention to our communities and the world at large, including issues of social and economic justice at home, the challenges to democracy in Israel and the search for a just two state solution for the Palestinians and Israel.
This year, we must also contend with the global COVID-19 pandemic. Because of social distancing, most of us will not hear the shofar in our synagogues and temples. This does not mean that we can’t find alternate ways to participate in this annual process of personal and communal rededication. That is why this Rosh Hashanah, we’re uniting with J Street, Habonim Dror North America, the New Israel Fund, Partners for Progressive Israel and T'ruah to give you a platform to blow the shofar and share your plan for fighting injustice in the new year.
Here's how you can participate:
- Send us your video. In a short video clip (90 seconds max), share your reason for sounding the shofar. Which form of adversity, intolerance or suffering are you committed to battling this year? This recording will serve both as a way to connect with other Jewish advocates and as a resolution to yourself. Be sure to begin your recording by saying, "I sound the shofar for..." (Click here to load your video and to see other examples.)
- Blow the shofar with other Jews across the country. Join Ameinu -- along with our partners at J Street, Habonim Dror North America, the New Israel Fund, Partners for Progressive Israel and T'ruah -- on Sunday, September 20 at 4pm Eastern (the second day of Rosh Hashanah) for a virtual shofar blowing. You can sign up through this Zoom link.
May 5781 be a year of good health and happiness for your entire family. And may we all find constructive ways to bring better days to our communities and the world.
Be well and stay safe,
Miki Golod
