Help us finish Q3 strong and keep Greens ready for what comes next. Dear Friend, This end-of-September note finds me in the throes of yet another unexpected election. August was devoted to campaigning in three by-elections for federal seats, with election day August 31. September 21, Parliament re-opened, and we faced a monster, Bill C-39: yet another omnibus bill, 232 pages changing the Canada Labour Code, to reduce Labour's right to strike; amending the Species at Risk Act, Navigable Waters Protection Act, CEPA, and the Fisheries Act. I will not list them all - 20 bills amended. In June 2025, the Liberals, backed by Conservatives when Carney only had a minority Parliament, forced through C-5, the Build Canada Act. That law is still in place allowing any and all environmental laws to be ignored if a project is in the “national interest.” Now this bill, the “Build Canada Strong Act,” keeps all those dreadful exemptions from the 2025 Build Canada Act, adding “Regions of National Interest” – or as some environmental groups are terming them “sacrifice zones” – where again the laws will not apply. Worse, back in June 2025, the power grabs of C-5 were tempered with limitations that made these powers “temporary,” only to be in place for five years. C-39 makes these changes permanent. And, on Tuesday, BC Premier Eby called an opportunistic snap provincial election – a full two years early! Overlapping October 17 local elections across the province of British Columbia. Of course, I am the leader of the Green Party of Canada, not BC. But you may know my mantra by now: “When Greens do well anywhere, Greens do well everywhere!” I celebrate the growing popularity of the Greens of England and Wales, just as I am rooting for Pete Fry to be the first Green Mayor of Vancouver. And the BC Greens – under new leader Emily Lowan, the youngest leader of any party in Canada – are poised to make waves, and electoral gains, in BC’s election is October 24! At the national level, the Green Party of Canada is needed more than ever. As your lone Green MP, I am so deeply grateful for your continued generosity. On November 14 Greens will have concluded an open, democratic and smooth leadership transition. Thanks to Nira Dookeran for running and to the other “almost” candidates who helped build the party through new memberships. In the end, with Nira having to step aside for personal reasons, there is no doubt that our anticipated next leader is a wonderful choice. I could not be happier about the prospect of working with Mike Morrice again soon! Please give all you can to ensure our coffers are in good shape! Believe it or not, there will be six more by-elections for empty seats in the House of Commons – and likely all in the final months of 2026! With the multiple threats to our future – climate crisis, nuclear proliferation and now a growing understanding of the existential threat of superintelligent AI, it is tempting to crawl into a corner and adopt the fetal position! But we do NOT! We rise. We link arms in solidarity with Indigenous peoples, the marginalized and the non-human life with whom we share this planet – the only one in the universe that supports and sustains life (as far as we know)! So it is worth fighting for! For our children and grandchildren. Sending donations to the Green Party may not seem like putting up a defence of life itself – but it truly is exactly that!
