Advocating for a Complete Census Count

As the 2020 Census draws nearer, organizations are mobilizing to ensure the count is accurate. An undercount could result in the loss of representation, as well as deeply impact funding for community service providers across the country.

In Alabama, a group of five nonprofits are collaborating to prevent an undercount. The Alabama Hard-to-Count Collaborative is using advocacy to guarantee that historically hard-to-reach populations are represented accurately. In California’s Central Valley, 501(c)(3) public charities that empower Latinx and immigrant populations have come together to make sure the groups they serve are counted.

How 501(c)(3) Reproductive Rights, Health, and Justice Organizations Can Hold Elected Officials Accountable for Official Actions

Public charities play an important role in educating the public about policy issues and actions taken by their elected officials. As part of an advocacy campaign, a nonprofit may want to publicize its views by criticizing or praising an elected public official for their actions. Check out our new resource for more guidance.

Commenting on Candidates’ Statements about Reproductive Rights

Candidates for public office sometimes make statements about abortion and reproductive rights that are incorrect, or with which nonprofits disagree and may wish to set the record straight. How can 501(c)(3) organizations respond to candidates or political parties’ statements on reproductive rights and remain nonpartisan? Check out our new resource to learn more.

Most 501(c)(3) public charities rely on support from foundations to carry out their programs, but don't always understand the legal rules that govern how foundations can give out money for advocacy activities.
