Recently, a judge blocked the state order requiring school districts to reopen
amidst the coronavirus pandemic, saying that state officials “have essentially
ignored the requirement of school safety by requiring the statewide opening of
brick-and-mortar schools to receive already allocated funding.”
You read that right. Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran threatened to
withhold vital funding for schools that reopen virtually as they work out what
is best for the health of their staff and students. It is no surprise that many
school districts want to hold off on reopening until they have guidance and
resources from the CDC, and we don’t believe that they should be reprimanded
for that.

School districts like that of Hillsborough County were threatened with a loss
of nearly $200 million if they opened remotely.
We couldn’t agree more with the judge who blocked this state order. Our nation
depends on the CDC for the highest-level expertise in how to handle diseases,
and schools that want the greenlight from them before proceeding are simply
doing what they think is best for their staff and students.
Thankfully, districts are now free to make decisions among educators and
administrators that are best for their students and their communities, leaving
them free to wait until the CDC has a comprehensive plan for reopening.
Add your name if you support this ruling and believe that it should be up to
the school districts, not Gov. DeSantis and Trump, to go remote or not.
