One of our endorsed candidates, practicing physician Dr. Cameron Webb, was just hit with a racist attack ad from the GOP.
The video begins with inflammatory footage of fires, riots, and looting in American streets, and then presents an image of Dr. Webb’s face. When elected, Dr. Webb will be the first black physician to vote in the House. The GOP is attempting to connect Dr. Webb to the riots based purely on the color of his skin. After these disingenuous attacks and blatant racism, the ad asks voters to “look past [Webb’s] smooth presentation” -- an obvious racist dog whistle.

Dr. Webb’s opponent, Bob Good, has seen the writing on the wall -- the poll released last month showed the two candidates in a virtual dead heat. Dr. Webb is well on his way to flipping Virginia’s 5th Congressional District blue and taking the fight for lower drug prices, a public health insurance option, and meaningful criminal justice reform to Washington.
That’s why Good and the GOP are pulling out all the stops -- stoking racial tensions by condemning their imagined association of Dr. Webb with the “radical Marxist BLM movement,” playing to the worst of the Republican base with dog whistle ads like this one, and instigating a culture war by advocating against same-sex marriage and nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans.
We must not allow this far-right extremist to serve in the next Congress. We must defend Dr. Webb, flip VA-05 blue, and move toward a government that promotes the health and success of all Americans -- not the same toxic bigotry we’ve seen peddled by the current administration.
But right now, we’re falling $3,047 short of our grassroots fundraising goal -- and we don’t have the resources we need to support candidates like Dr. Webb.
