I have exciting news to share, friend. We just heard that for the first time in years, the House will vote on two bills to protect our coasts from Big Polluters.

Since Trump took office, his Interior Department has been working to open all of our coasts and waters to dangerous offshore drilling ? putting coastal communities and marine ecosystems at risk and potentially setting us back decades in the fight against climate change. This is unacceptable: Our communities depend on clean and healthy coastlines ? but just one oil spill from offshore drilling could destroy a coastal region beyond repair.

But the pro-environment House ? that you helped to elect ? is working to stop the Trump administration from selling out huge parts of our coasts to Big Polluters.

There are two must-pass bills to protect our coasts: the Coastal and Marine Economies Protection Act (H.R. 1941) ? which will ban offshore drilling off the entire Atlantic coast and ensure that the Pacific coast is also protected ? and the Protecting and Securing Florida's Coastline Act (H.R. 205) ? which will permanently extend the offshore drilling moratorium in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. Together, these are the most significant federal votes against offshore drilling and seismic testing in decades and it's critical that we win with the strongest margin of victory possible. We know how much is at stake in the fight to protect our waters: One oil spill along our coast could wipe out livelihoods and critical natural resources for generations. Trump is gambling with our coasts and waters for Big Polluter profits and we cannot stay silent.

Challenged by sea-level rise and erosion, our coastal communities are already on the front lines of climate change; we can't put them at further risk of an oil spill. Plus, intensifying coastal drilling is out-of-step with our nation's transition to clean energy and action on climate change ? we need to be moving away from dirty oil and gas, not increasing it! This is the bottom line: Opening our waters to offshore drilling prioritizes polluter's profits at the expense of ecosystems and communities.

Earlier this year, LCV defeated Trump in our court case, securing offshore drilling protections for virtually the entire Arctic Ocean and key portions of the Atlantic. We must keep up the fight against the Trump administration to save our coasts ? and this is the next step.
