USMNT Starts Its 2030 Cycle With a 4–1 Win as Two Teenagers Score on Debut
The United States opened its first international window after the 2026 World
Cup with a heavily refreshed squad, 11 first-time internationals and debut
goals from teenagers Justin Ellis and Julian Hall.

The United States men's national team began its first post-2026 World Cup
international window with a 4–1 victory over Peru in Orlando.
The match was not a World Cup qualifier. It was the opening international
match of the new four-year cycle leading toward the 2030 tournament.

THE YOUTH MOVEMENT Eleven players made their senior U.S. debuts — including
eight teenagers. Mauricio Pochettino used the first match of the new cycle to
expand the player pool rather than simply return to the veteran group that
competed at the World Cup.

JUSTIN ELLIS / AGE 19 4' Goal on his senior international debut. Ellis
opened the scoring from a Gio Reyna assist in the same Orlando stadium where he
plays his club soccer.
Peru equalized through Gianluca Lapadula before halftime, sending the teams
into the break level at 1–1.
THE SECOND HALF BELONGED TO THE U.S.
Malik Tillman restored the lead with a 66th-minute penalty after debutant
Mathis Albert drew the foul moments after entering the match.

JULIAN HALL / AGE 18 72' Eleven minutes after entering the match, Hall
scored in his senior debut. Sebastian Berhalter supplied the assist for the
teenager's first international goal.
Berhalter then scored from distance in the 90th minute to complete the 4–1
result, with Hall providing the assist.

THE DETAIL THAT STOOD OUT Every U.S. goal involved at least one player
making his senior international debut. Ellis scored the opener, Albert won the
penalty for the second, Hall scored the third and then assisted Berhalter for
the fourth.
POC HETTINO IS BUILDING A LARGER POOL
The match was Mauricio Pochettino's first since signing a new contract that
keeps him as U.S. head coach through 2030.
Several established players, including Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun and
Weston McKennie, were not part of this roster, creating space for younger
players to receive senior minutes.

WORLD CUP 2030 The next World Cup will be centered in Morocco, Portugal and
Spain. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will each host one centenary
celebration match as the tournament marks 100 years since the first World Cup.
ORLANDO REMAINS A STRONG U.S. VENUE
The match drew a sellout crowd of 24,228 at Inter&Co Stadium.
The U.S. remains undefeated through eight senior men's national team matches
at the Orlando venue.

NEXT MATCH The U.S. travels to St. Louis to face Chile on September 29. The
broader international window gives Pochettino another chance to evaluate the
young group before the established core returns.

THE SIGNAL The 4–1 score matters less than who produced it: the first match
of the new cycle immediately expanded the group of young players competing for
places in the 2030 squad.
