Dear John,

Allow me to take a moment to recognize the suffering and loss too many are experiencing due to the wildfires ravaging the West Coast. The devastation goes beyond property damage and irreparable harm to our environment: people are losing their lives and millions are forced to breathe in some of the unhealthiest and most dangerous air in the world right now. Our prayers and our thoughts are with them all.

But this moment is also a call to action, and to fight for progress on what many are finally realizing is the last call for mitigating the worst outcomes of our current off-the-charts levels of greenhouse gas emissions. It doesn’t have to be this way; and we don’t need to sacrifice a strong economy for a cleaner, greener world. We can have both with a massive jobs plan that stimulates the economy and transforms it to a clean energy-powered economy.
