** New Mexico voters aren't a sideshow

Deb Haaland has turned down a debate with every major news outlet in New Mexico.

KRQE offered a debate. KOAT offered a debate. KVIA offered a debate. The Albuquerque Journal and the Santa Fe New Mexican each offered a debate. I said yes to every single one. She said no to every single one.

This week, she walked away from KOB too, the one debate her own campaign had agreed to. Her campaign's explanation? They said they want to "move past this sideshow."

Think about that. A debate is the one night when both candidates stand on the same stage, with no script and no handlers, and answer directly to the people of New Mexico. That is what Deb Haaland's campaign is calling a sideshow.

This mess was of her campaign's own making. I agreed to the KOB debate on June 3, the day after the primary. Her campaign waited until July 20 to agree. When KOB picked October 8 as a compromise between both campaigns, she said she couldn't make it. Every date she offered instead falls after early voting begins on October 6.

That isn't a scheduling problem. It's a strategy: keep voters from seeing her on a debate stage until they've already started casting ballots.

New Mexico voters aren't a sideshow. They're the whole point. They deserve to see both candidates answer tough questions, side by side, before a single ballot is cast. If Deb Haaland thinks answering to them is beneath her, that tells you exactly how she would govern.

I'll be at KOB on October 8 at 6 p.m., just like I said I would. There will be two podiums on that stage. Whether she fills hers is up to her.
