** PJI DEFEATS COLLEGE IN RELIGIOUS RIGHTS CASE ([link removed])

Pacific Justice Institute secured a courtroom victory when a federal court rejected Chaffey Community College District’s attempt to prevent a religious accommodation case from proceeding toward a jury trial. PJI client Maritssa Bonilla-Guerra received a religious exemption from the college’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, but Chaffey imposed a fragmented schedule that required her to report to campus at 5:00 a.m., work remotely later in the morning, and use paid leave to complete her workday. The court found that a jury must decide whether Chaffey provided a reasonable accommodation and unlawfully retaliated against Bonilla-Guerra. The ruling allows her religious accommodation and retaliation claims to move forward, giving her the opportunity to present the evidence against the college before a jury.

Olympus Spa is a Christian, family-operated Korean women’s spa fighting to preserve its female-only facilities. PJI and Alliance Defending Freedom are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case and protect both women’s privacy and the spa’s First Amendment rights. Former public school students are now rallying behind PJI’s Supreme Court fight for Olympus Spa. Their new friend-of-the-court brief shares disturbing firsthand accounts from school locker rooms and restrooms after access was opened based on gender identity. Their experiences reveal the consequences women and girls can face when sex-separated privacy is erased.
