I just spent the morning on Skid Row.

Most Californians have no idea what’s happening down there, and most don’t want to know. I’ve been in law enforcement my whole career and it still shocked me.

Some of the dogs on Skid Row are so hungry they eat rocks. Days before we arrived, a rescue team pulled four abandoned dogs out of an apartment complex. Drug dealers force feed drugs to dogs to see if they’re lethal — like guinea pigs.

Drugs and feces everywhere. Women being trafficked. Thousands of people and hundreds of animals suffering around the clock, children among them.

Skid Row is the most vivid example of third-world conditions in California, but this is happening in Oakland, San Francisco, and San Diego, too.

What makes me angry is that this is avoidable. The laws are on the books to fix Skid Row. California and LA County already fund the programs. The beds exist. What we lack is anyone in power willing to enforce the law.

Rob Bonta has been Attorney General for five years. He’s filed 82 lawsuits against the Trump administration. He has not spent one morning on Skid Row.

When I’m Attorney General, I’ll enforce the law, get people and animals off the street, and connect them to resources that you, as a taxpayer, already fund.
