As I wrote to you earlier last week, the conflict in Yemen has intensified, triggering a growing humanitarian emergency and forcing increasing numbers of families to flee both inside the country and across borders in search of safety.

In Yemen, families have already endured years of conflict, hardship and repeated displacement. Now they are once again being forced to leave behind their belongings, livelihoods and communities, uncertain of where they will find safety. Thousands have fled across to Djibouti.

In a video, our representative in Djibouti tells us:

“People are arriving after a difficult sea journey, many exhausted, distressed and carrying what little they could take with them. Djiboutian families and the Yemeni refugee community are opening their doors and sharing what little they have, but the humanitarian response, already facing a dire funding crisis, is being stretched fast.” Watch full video here.

Families urgently require shelter, food, clean water, healthcare and protection services, while communities hosting displaced people and refugees are coming under increasing pressure.

Inside Yemen, our UNHCR teams are delivering protection services, emergency shelter, relief items and cash assistance. In Djibouti, we are supporting the registration and protection of refugees arriving in search of safety, while providing shelter and essential relief items.
