Dear neighbor,
This week I joined Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) officials to celebrate the $2 million in federal funding I secured for much needed infrastructure improvements at Miraleste Intermediate School.
Every child deserves access to a safe, well-equipped school where they can learn, grow, and thrive. That’s why I am deeply concerned by the trump administration’s cuts to public education funding. Cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from our schools threatens the resources our students rely on.
These funds will help our community beyond Miraleste as the school is home to PVPUSD’s Central Kitchen, which prepares meals for 10 elementary schools, three intermediate schools, two comprehensive high schools, and one continuation school. Upgrading and replacing aging utilities infrastructure – including the infrastructure supporting the Central Kitchen – will help ensure students across the district continue to have access to reliable facilities and nutritious meals.
I look forward to seeing how this project will enhance PVPUSD’s service to its students and staff.
Despite calls from both sides of the aisle to keep Congress working, Republican leadership has canceled the final two weeks of September votes.
There is too much at stake for Congress to take a vacation. We should be working to lower the high cost of living and addressing the risks posed by AI.
The bipartisan AI Kill Switch Act, which I introduced with Congressman Nathaniel Moran (R-TX), is one example of the commonsense legislation Congress could be working on. Our bill would require developers of the most powerful AI systems to maintain the ability to slow down, suspend, or shut them down. It also gives the federal government the clear authority and process to shut down rogue AI models.
Instead, Speaker Johnson sent members home early.
That is not what the American people elected us to do.
I will continue working with my Democratic colleagues to push for action on issues that matter to the American people.
CONGRESS-BUNDESTAG YOUTH EXCHANGE: The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange, or CBYX, program is a dynamic and immersive exchange program jointly offered by the U.S. and German governments.
