Summer Lee is the first Black woman to ever represent Pennsylvania in
Congress. Since 1789. That's how long it took.
And that says something real about who this system has made room for, and
who it hasn't.
Here's something a lot of people don't realize. Black women running for
Congress consistently raise less money than their counterparts, and it's
not because they're any less qualified or any less serious.
It's because the donor networks that fund most campaigns were never really
built with them in mind. Groups have been documenting this for years. And
here's the part that gets us: that gap doesn't just disappear once you win
the seat.
