Dear John,
Whether it’s a coffee shop, your favorite taco spot, a boutique or market, small businesses are the backbone of our community and fuel our local economy. Many of these businesses have been around for decades, bringing great service and community to their customers throughout our region.
But right now, small businesses here in the Inland Empire are facing the increased cost of fuel, food, utilities and other goods due to Trump’s tariffs and reckless war with Iran. And while mom-and-pop shops and restaurants are being forced to cut costs, the biggest and wealthiest corporations get even richer thanks to Republican tax cuts in their Big Ugly Bill.
I’m a strong supporter of our local businesses right here in the Inland Empire. This week, I stopped by two locally owned businesses for great food and coffee and met the hardworking people who run them.

Mi Cocina Mexican Restaurant in Highland is a Latino- and family-owned restaurant that has been serving amazing tacos, enchiladas, drinks and more for 35 years.
I stopped by Mi Cocina for breakfast, where I enjoyed some delicious huevos rancheros and met with owners Armando, Norma and Carlos. They’ve worked hard for decades, caring for and feeding our neighbors. It’s clear when you walk through Mi Cocina’s doors that they’ve put tremendous love into their business and their community.

Like many people in the Inland Empire, I look forward to my morning coffee every day. This week I stopped by one of my favorite spots, Nine Eight Five Coffee in San Bernardino, to grab a latte and meet with the owners.
This local, Latino-owned coffee shop serves incredible coffee and food that fuel our community. I chatted with Nine Eight Five’s owner, Abraham, to learn more about the opportunities and challenges that come with running his small business. He and his team have created a community space where you can enjoy a great atmosphere, order food and drinks, get work done and catch up with your friends.

Small businesses are the heartbeat of the Inland Empire, bringing us food, culture and goods while keeping our local economy strong. I’ll keep fighting back against Republicans’ reckless policies that are driving up costs, to make sure small businesses like Nine Eight Five and Mi Cocina can continue serving our region.
