The weirdness of the week continues…We have been requesting a meeting with Senator Pan’s office since SB276 was introduced. Yesterday Senator Pan’s office asked us to meet with him and this morning at 9:45am we took the opportunity to do so.
We contemplated canceling the meeting, but with the Governor’s tweets calling for additional amendments to SB 276 we decided to meet with Senator Pan. The meeting was short and the discussion on the policy was very short and not as detailed as we wished it could be. The end result was as to be expected: we agreed to continue to disagree. He had to run off to the floor session at 10am, all the while knowing that he was going to put SB276 on the floor right then. While this was no victory, it was a first, that Senator Pan took a meeting with the opposition on SB276.
SB276 was brought to the senate floor this morning and voted on and the Senate voted for Concurrence of the Amendments from the Assembly. The vote was 28 Aye and 11 NO votes. Sadly, Senators Allen, Hueso and Galgiani flipped their votes form the last vote, while still voicing concerns with the bill. Once the session is finished you can view the discussion here (http://www.calchannel.com/video-on-demand/).
We are still waiting for the Governor’s office to respond as we have been working to secure a meeting with he and his staff, but hope that his tweets from last night and the people standing outside his office requesting him to meet, will prompt that meeting.
It is likely there will be a trailer bill (a second bill) that has his amendments in it brought forward in the next couple of days.
What can you do? See the email from earlier yesterday – all of those still apply…
· Visit Your Assembly member’s and Senator’s district office – even if you already have many times, and talk to them about the second bill and your concerns.
· Tweet to Assembly members and Governor Newsom multiple times a day. Respond to tweets and retweet
· Donate to A Voice for Choice Advocacy (http://avoiceforchoiceadvocacy.org/donate/)
WE ARE STRONG AND WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE BUT WE HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING FOR OUR MEDICAL RIGHTS!
THANK YOU!!
