Ending Homelessness
What to Know: Recently, Austin officials and non-profits came together to for a “week of action to end homelessness.” ([link removed] ) (Spoiler Alert: They didn’t.)
The TPPF Take: Austin officials will never “end homelessness” until they address the root causes of so much of it—substance abuse, addiction, untreated mental illness.
“Austin’s failed ‘Housing First’ approach specifically denies funding and support for homelessness agencies and ministries that require people to address their underlying issues,” explains TPPF Senior Fellow Michele Steeb. “What’s needed is a ‘People First’ approach that supports people in addressing the root causes of their homelessness.”

Mental Health
What to Know: A new study shows that people just released from incarceration experience a much higher degree of trauma than the average person. ([link removed] )
The TPPF Take: Traumatic events can be a barrier to successful reentry into society for those recently released from prison.
“Research has produced evidence that participants in after-release programs therapeutic in nature had lower rates of re-incarceration, as well as higher rates of employment, when compared to those who completed the treatment in prison but did not participate in programming after release,” says TPPF’s Andrew Afifian.

Not Good Enough
What to Know: The Houston Chronicle’s editorial board says that while the Texas foster care system is improving, it’s not improving fast enough. ([link removed] )
The TPPF Take: The child welfare system needs fresh ideas to restore families and keep kids safe.
“The Texas Legislature should pass a law that will allow for parents, whose rights were previously terminated, to regain those rights through getting their lives together,” says TPPF’s Nikki Pressley. “When parents have re-established their fitness, this option would provide a healthier and more restorative alternative to emancipation.”
