The 1619 Project & Revisionist History

In August 2019, The New York Times launched the 1619 project. According to the Time’s website, “The 1619 Project is an ongoing initiative from The New York Times Magazine that began in August 2019, the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”

The word ‘reframe’ should cause immediate alarm bells in our minds. It is evident that the Project uses revisionist history to get its points across—which is justified through critical race theory. This theory assumes our nation's systems and values are inherently racist because they were created as institutions to allow white Americans to prosper, while minorities suffer. Sadly, the 1619 Project has gained national attention and expanded its audience through not only the Magazine, but a podcast, and a curriculum for schools.

This week’s episode of Engage with Eagle Forum, “The 1619 Project,” is a close-up examination of the Project’s consequences and end-goals. Hosts Tabitha Walter and Kirsten Hasler interview Dr. Carol Swain. Dr. Swain is an award-winning political scientist, a former professor of political science and professor of law at Vanderbilt University, and a lifetime member of the James Madison Society. She is also the author or editor of nine books and has written numerous opinion pieces published in many national news outlets. Dr. Swain has also been instrumental in the 1776 Unites Campaign, which provides an alternative narrative to the 1619 Project and celebrates the ideals of our great nation.

Before race tensions came to a head this year, the New York Times began pushing a harmful school curriculum called The 1619 Project. This project aims to revise history and push Marxist ideologies. Dr. Carol Swain joined Engage with Eagle Forum to set the record straight.
