Hello John,

As you know NYCI, alongside others, lobbied successfully for the retention of the Department of Children in this Government, but we voiced our concerned at initial indications that ‘Youth Affairs’ may be dropped from the name of the Department, and we called for this to be reversed.

Confirmation of 'Youth' in title of Department

I am delighted to be communicating to you now Minister O'Gorman's message below confirming that 'Youth' is back in the title of the Department and noting the value of youth work.

This is great news and a vindication of our patient and quiet lobbying on this since July. It sends a strong signal that young people are valued and is a testament to what
our members and the wider youth sector can achieve when we work together and make our voices heard in unison.

We must now take this unity forward in our Budget 2021 campaign for investment in youth work, which I will contact you on in the coming days.

In the meantime, thank you for your continued support and I'll leave you with Minister O'Gorman's positive message below,

Kind regards,

Mary

Dear colleagues,

In my initial engagement with the youth sector, both individually and with the Youth Sector Oversight Group, I was struck by the concerns that were communicated to me from the sector regarding changes to the Department’s previous working title.  Of course, youth issues are always going to be a critical focus of my department, and I feel it is a positive message to our young people to have them recognised in the agreed departmental title.

As such, I am pleased to be able to write to you today to confirm that the new title of my department will be the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth

The last few months have been incredibly challenging for us all and we know that young people have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and the associated and ongoing restrictions.  The value of youth work is clear, and the innovative and diligent work of the sector in the last six months has impressed me immensely.

I look forward to working with you all as we strive to achieve the very best outcomes for our children and young people.  They deserve nothing less.

Minister Roderic O’Gorman, TD
