Despite all the money pouring into the artificial intelligence boom, it feels as though only a small handful of names have been consistent winners.
Plenty of companies quietly making that boom possible have been overlooked, with their shares languishing while the giants soar. Ciena Corporation (NYSE: CIEN) is a good example.

However, that disconnect may be starting to correct itself.
After a punishing slide, the stock appears to have found a floor early this month and has started to turn higher, climbing around 17% in less than three weeks.
Even after its fall, Ciena is still up roughly 50% for the year. The current bounce suggests investors are beginning to look again at a name they had written off. A well-timed vote of confidence from Wall Street this week has helped, making this a good time to ask whether the market has been too negative on Ciena’s prospects.
The Bottleneck Behind the UpgradeThat vote of confidence came from Evercore ISI, with analyst Amit Daryanani upgrading Ciena to Outperform earlier this week and setting a $550 price target. From where the stock trades today, that represents around 50% upside. Just as importantly, Daryanani’s argument cuts to the heart of the bull case: Ciena sits at one of the AI boom’s most overlooked bottlenecks.
This bottleneck theory is simple. Amid all the noise about chips and computing power, far less attention goes to how that data actually moves around. Modern AI systems shuttle staggering volumes of information between and within data centers, and moving it quickly enough has become a serious constraint on how powerful those systems can be. Daryanani pinpointed connectivity as an increasingly critical bottleneck to the pace of AI’s advancement.
This is Ciena’s world. The company specializes in optical networking, the high-speed connections that carry data over long distances and, increasingly, across the sprawling AI facilities being built everywhere. As one of the few dedicated names in the field, it is particularly well positioned to benefit as those systems and their data demands continue to grow.
A Business Hitting Its StrideThe bullish case is more than just a story, because the numbers behind it are seriously impressive. In its most recent quarterly report, released earlier this month, Ciena reported year-over-year revenue growth of 37% and earnings-per-share growth of 215%.
More telling still is the pipeline of future work. Ciena’s management pointed to a swelling order book, with its backlog expected to top $10 billion by the end of its fiscal year. That gives both the company and the market solid visibility into future revenue.
Ciena is also pushing into new territory. Beyond its traditional strength in long-distance links, the company is developing products that operate inside data centers themselves, pursuing a market it believes could be worth many billions of dollars. With leading technology and a slate of new products, it has several ways to win rather than relying on a single opportunity.
What the Doubters SayNone of this means the risks have vanished. The stock’s steep fall from its June high and the volatility that followed are reminders of how quickly sentiment can turn on a name like this. The biggest worry is simply that the AI spending spree may not last. Ciena’s fortunes are tightly tied to how much the cloud giants continue to invest, so any slowdown could hit its orders hard.
There is also the matter of who its customers are. A handful of large clients account for a hefty slice of Ciena’s revenue, with one customer alone making up close to 20%. Such concentration cuts both ways: it is beneficial while those customers spend freely, but it could hurt if even one of them pulls back.
An Overlooked PlayWeighing it all up, Ciena makes a compelling case as an underappreciated way to play the AI infrastructure boom. It sits at a genuine bottleneck, its core business is growing rapidly, its order book offers rare visibility, and Wall Street is clearly leaning toward the upside.
The caution comes not from the bull case but from the setup itself. Ciena’s shares remain volatile, its valuation demands strong growth for years to come, and expectations will likely stay high after this week’s upgrade. That tension, between an early-stage turnaround and a business with plenty still to prove, is what keeps the stock finely balanced.
For those who believe the AI buildout has years left to run, though, Ciena increasingly looks like one of its more overlooked beneficiaries. This week’s upgrade is a clear sign that others are already catching on. |
