What an extraordinary community we've built here.

On Friday, I asked our supporters to set aside the campaign for a few days and pitch in to help fund relief and recovery efforts. The response has been extraordinary. At latest count, 691 Team Merkley supporters have donated $57,216 to Oregon relief efforts.

Combined with the efforts of Senator Wyden and Representatives DeFazio, Blumenauer, Bonamici, and Schrader, a total of 3466 donors have donated a total of $299,591 for wildfire relief and recovery so far.

As for the wildfires, here's where we stand.

More than a million acres in Oregon have burned in the last week. That's about double our annual average in just one week. About 40,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, and at the peak, about half a million Oregonians were on "get ready" alert status.

The good news is that firefighters have been successfully pushing back the fires from populated areas, reducing the number of people under evacuation alerts.

Unfortunately, some of the biggest fires are still zero percent contained, particularly in Clackamas and Marion counties. And we're certainly worried about the winds kicking back up again. Weather forecasters are hoping for rain early this week that should help reduce fire danger and clear out some of the smoke.

Over the last couple of days, I've driven over 600 miles through Oregon, and never left the smoke. Community after community has been devastated.

I've been meeting with the heroes working day and night at incident command centers throughout our state. And here's what I know: In times of crisis, Oregonians come together. I'm fighting for the resources we need to rebuild and recover--and we'll fight together to tackle the climate chaos that fuels these catastrophic fires.
