I gave President Trump a history lesson.

Last week, I shared the story of how New Mexico got its name and the legacies of patriotism and progress in nuestra Tierra del Encanto.

President Trump needed this history lesson because he’s fantasizing about renaming New Mexico instead of addressing his illegal war with Iran and the skyrocketing cost of diesel.

I explained things to President Trump as plainly as possible:

New Mexico got its name in 1589, our soldiers fought in the Revolutionary War, defeated the Confederate army as it sought to expand slavery into the West, and secured voting rights for every Native American.

Mr. Trump, you can’t rescue your unpopular presidency by slapping new names on lakes, gulfs, states or buildings. We will always be New Mexico — a state built by and for our diverse and vibrant communities.

We have some of the highest percentages of Veterans, and also hard-working ranchers and farmers who feed our communities.

We have some of the best policies on voting rights, bilingual education, universal childcare, and free college.

Trumpublicans can boast of skyrocketing grocery prices, runaway data centers, unpopular wars, and a level of corruption never seen in America until now.

New Mexico will help lead our nation back to a place where our future is brighter, more affordable, and less divisive.
