Dear John,

Almost a quarter of all peanuts grown in the United States are grown right here in Georgia’s 2nd District. We produce more peanuts than any other district in the country, primarily by family farms that make up the backbone of the rural South. The importance of the peanut industry in our district has even earned me the nickname ‘the Peanut Congressman’ – a title I wear proudly.

As co-chairman of the Congressional Peanut Caucus, I am glad to recognize today, September 13, as National Peanut Day.

Today, as we thank the farmers who power our state’s economy and feed our nation, I want to discuss the peanut industry in Congress. My work writing the Farm Bill, on the Appropriations Committee, and as a mentor to the next generation of agricultural advocates, has helped the rural South take steps forward – but this work is not done, and unfortunately there are very few legislators who share my level of commitment.

John, I am running for Congress as a voice for peanut farmers across America. I would be devastated if I could not continue this work in Congress and had to eliminate protections that saved Georgia’s family farms.

But I am facing strong opposition in my reelection campaign and must ask for your help. Will you contribute $25 – or any amount you can afford – to my reelection fund? Every dollar counts as we quickly approach Election Day. Chip in: actblue.com/donate/sanford-bishop

Thank you to all of the farmers who power our state’s economy and feed our nation. I am committed to advocating for you and for the agricultural industries that power the rural South.

To all of you – whether you prefer yours in boiled, roasted, brittle, or butter form – I wish you a happy Peanut Day and encourage you to consider the value of agriculture and family farms in your life.

Be well,

Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
