On Election Day, the phones at Louisiana Democratic Party headquarters in Baton Rouge started ringing at 6 a.m. and never stopped.

Hundreds of calls flooded our voter protection hotline from across the state during last Saturday’s primary elections. The calls described the same story over and over: requesting a Democratic ballot but receiving a Republican ballot, voters unable to cast a ballot in the Senate primary, No Party voters receiving the incorrect forms to fill out, and many voters leaving polling locations altogether because they were so frustrated with the process.

This chaos was not an accident. As one LSU political scientist put it, Governor Landry created a system that was "almost designed in a lab to discourage people from participating in the electoral process." Our own executive director Dadrius Lanus called it what it was: voter suppression and voter intimidation.

This is what MAGA control of Louisiana elections looks like.

That is exactly why we are building Organize Louisiana — the largest voter education and turnout operation this state has ever seen. Ahead of the midterms, we will be in every corner of Louisiana educating voters on their rights, how to register, how to vote, and what to do when someone tries to stop them. 

After this fiasco, we also need to expand the amount of poll watchers and volunteers on the ground who can report issues at polling locations back to our headquarters immediately on Election Day. No Louisiana voter should ever walk away from a polling place without their ballot being counted.

But we cannot do this alone. The Louisiana Democratic Party is one of the most underfunded state parties in the nation. We are asking Democrats from across the country to help us fund this unprecedented operation.
