Trump is trying to silence Black and Brown communities. Again.
Last month, a leaked draft revealed the Trump administration was considering sweeping changes to the 2030 Census. Now it's official — the Census Bureau has formally proposed the rule and opened it for public comment.
The overhaul would remove race and ethnicity data and exclude millions of immigrants, putting Black, Brown, and immigrant communities at risk of losing federal funding and political representation.
If we’re not counted, then we’re not seen. Removing people and erasing data will make it easier for them to continue under-serving our communities.

The Constitution is clear: representation must be apportioned according to the "whole number of persons in each State." But Trump’s proposal INTENTIONALLY distorts that count, denying communities representation and the resources they're owed.
The proposed rule would also prohibit race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation questions from the Census questionnaire. This data isn't just a formality — it underpins civil rights enforcement, redistricting, research, and our ability to understand disparities in our communities.
It would also exclude foreign citizens from the population used to determine congressional representation, unless they're also U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. That means undocumented immigrants — and many people lawfully living, working, and studying here — would be erased from the numbers. And it would only count people whose address is confirmed by tax records, meaning that MILLIONS of people, especially low-income families, will never get counted at all.
The Census only happens once every 10 years. And removing people and erasing data makes it easier for the government to keep under-serving Black and Brown communities, on purpose. We refuse to allow it to happen.
