I spent this weekend in Arizona, spent a lot of time in Maricopa County. I did a TV interview, spoke at events, and talked to a lot of people who are working hard to make sure Democrats win up and down the ballot in November.
The interview was for Sunday Square Off on 12News. They asked me why I won’t move on from January 6th.
Here’s what I told them: I can’t move on because it’s not over.
The people who attacked the Capitol that day. Some of them are running for office right now. Some of them won their primaries. One of them is running for Congress in Rhode Island and calls himself a “proud J6er.” That’s not the past. That’s the ballot.
Arizona matters for a lot of reasons. Katie Hobbs is a governor who has stood up for voting rights in a state where that fight is real and her opponent? Andy Biggs, was loud in demanding the people who assaulted police on January 6th were released from prison and pardoned. Legislative races on the ballot there could determine whether Arizona looks like a functioning democracy in two years or something else entirely.
I went because I made a promise to myself after January 6th: I’m not going to stay quiet while the people who want to undo democracy run for the offices that control it.
November is six weeks away. If you’re in Arizona, vote. If you know someone in Arizona, call them this week. Don’t wait.
We held the line that day. We have to hold it again on November 3rd.
