This past week marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month and if you have seen any posts about it on social media, you might have seen something along the lines of, “Happy Hispanic Heritage Month except to MAGA Latinos.”

This has long been a common sentiment for many Latin Americans and Lefty Latinos since, according to them, any MAGA or Republican Latino is a “race traitor” or has “self-hate.” They believe we are betraying our people and want to “white” Americans.

Putting aside some of those declarations incorporate “Latinx” or “Latine” to avoid using “Latino,” this common feeling is one that is rife with hypocrisy.

Latinos in the United States have done a very good job presenting to White Leftists on, “All of us, somos una gran familia, we’re all one big, happy family.” They might have fooled White liberals, but they can’t fool me.

The hypocrisy is that Latinos who are born and raised in the U.S. are expected to have a loyalty to our “motherland” that is not practiced by Latinos in Latin America. Of course, this does not apply to everyone, but there is no denying the bigotry and biases against one each other are very real.

The dirty secret is that the wide range of Latinos and Hispanics are at constant odds with each other when Americans aren’t looking. Don’t believe me? Watch what happens when you call a Mexican a Guatemalan or when you call a Colombian a Venezuelan and vice versa.

The only reason why they are pushing the “we are unified message” now is because they are the flavor of the month to be used by Democrats to criticize President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

We don’t even have to compare different nationalities when talking about this lack of loyalty and solidarity. Using one example, I see all the time on social media how Mexicans from Mexico City look down on Mexicans from el campo, or the countryside in states like Oaxaca and Chiapas. Those states are generally poorer and have a higher indigenous population.

I saw that disdain when I shared a video of indigenous women from the state of Guerrero who pleaded in a video for President Trump to send the U.S. military to take on the cartels who had forced them from their homes.

Of course, Mexicans are more than able to disagree with pleas for help from the United States, but many of these comments went out of their way to denigrate these women for being indigenous, how these types of “uneducated” people are willing to sell out not for money, but tortillas and beans.

This is a big reason why Latinos such as myself prioritize the United States because this is our home and shrug off insults of being “traitors.” The loyalty the community loves to profess is conditional and goes away the second you think independently.

At the same time, this does not mean we have self-hate or think we’ll be White. We have an appreciation for our heritage, but when it comes to loyalty to country, the United States is number one and I don’t think that should be controversial. We have a duty as a citizen, like any other American, to put the needs of our country first.
