Hi, John,
Recently, I was reminded of the time I entered a high school science competition. The participants were asked to give a short answer to the question: What is a scientist?
After some thought, I answered: “A scientist is someone who searches for the truth and uses it to make the world a better place.”
To this day, it's a statement I stand by. My interests in molecules and the periodic table weren't the only things that led me to pursue a career in science. It was the search for truth and my desire to make things better.
When a constituent posed a great question to my opponent Lee Zeldin and myself in NewsDay, I was reminded of that science fair. They asked us to share how we will “restore science to government decision-making.”
The fact is, science goes beyond the lab. My favorite class to teach at Stony Brook University was a freshman seminar on the Chemistry of Cooking, because it shows just how much science affects our everyday lives.
Science is trusting experts and wearing a mask to protect your community. It’s finding a vaccine that will help us get back to work safely. It’s keeping our water and coastline clean. It’s baking a cake for your daughter’s birthday! In Congress, science looks like fighting for better health care, sustainable energy solutions to the climate crisis, and the creation of new jobs that will lead us into the future.
When I get to Washington, I’ll draft legislation based on facts -- not partisan spin -- so that we can end the pandemic, make health care affordable, and fight against the devastating effects of climate change. In other words, I’ll do what I have always done: search for the truth and use it to make the world better for my constituents.
Lee Zeldin's anti-science decision making and refusal to listen to the advice of experts have hurt families on Long Island. His record speaks for itself. He's voted to strip basic health care from those who need it. He voted for Trump’s tax plan, which caps deductions for home and property owners, denying crucial financial relief to Long Islanders. He voted against the HEROES Act, which would bring needed funding to our state and school districts. He co-sponsored a bill to allow concealed carry guns here in New York. He even voted against restoring the fundamental rights of Americans by reinstating the Voting Rights Act.
Our TV ads have been up on the air for a week now -- and every day, we're reaching voters with my pro-science message. My team tells me that each day, hundreds of people are signing up to join and learn more about our campaign.
I am thrilled by the positive response we've heard regarding our new ads, and I want to thank you for helping us reach tens of thousands of voters each day.
You make our efforts possible -- and with your continued support, we'll bring an end to leadership that casts doubt on science and truth.
It's time for real solutions that make our lives better.
Thank you for being part of this movement.
With gratitude,
Nancy
