Each week, we'll be introducing you to a few of our amazing candidates -- 21 women who are ready to get to work and fight for a more progressive, more inclusive Georgia. This week, the spotlight is on Nikki Merritt, Ceretta Smith, Bee Nguyen, Regina Lewis-Ward, and Ebony Carter.
These women all understand that our nation was built by organized labor, and they know how crucial it is to continue fighting for the rights of workers today. They will work for a fair minimum wage, safe working conditions, and good benefits for all Georgians.
Nikki is a Georgia native who attended the University of Georgia and Georgia State. She has lived in Gwinnett County for 16 years. Nikki worked in telecommunications for over two decades and proudly served in her local labor union, CWA 3204.
She'll take the fight for fair working conditions, fair pay, and fair benefits all the way to the Georgia Senate, because she knows that every person deserves the opportunity to improve the quality of their life.
Ceretta is a proud Army veteran -- someone who will always support and honor those who have heeded the call to defend our nation. She is also a union activist.
Ceretta served as the Women’s and Fair Practices Coordinator, Chief Steward, Legislative Political Coordinator, Local President, and Georgia State Council President for the largest Federal Government Union: the American Federation of Government Employees.
Ceretta knows that Labor Rights are Human Rights and Civil Rights, and she'll never stop fighting for working Georgians.
When Bee's parents -- refugees from Vietnam -- came to the United States, they instilled in her the value of hard work. She got through college and grad school thanks to jobs in the restaurant industry, and she knows what it means to fight for everything you've got.
In 2018, Bee joined a union for the first time: IBEW Local 613 in Atlanta. Bee believes in fair pay for fair work, full benefits, and expanding protections for workers on the front lines of the pandemic.
Regina grew up in Brooklyn, sharing a one-bathroom apartment with her parents and two siblings in a public housing unit. Her father was a tractor-trailer driver and member of the Teamsters Labor Union. Even with his union job, her family struggled -- sometimes relying on the New York City Housing Authority food pantry.
Regina knows that Georgia's working folks are the backbone of our state, and she believes that every Georgia worker deserves a living wage -- because no family should have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table.
As a graduate of Henry County high school, Ebony grew up in the community she's now hoping to represent in the State House. She went on to attend Georgia State, the first in her family to graduate from college.
Ebony's parents were proud union workers, one for the United States Postal Service. Both were union stewards. Ebony is committed to ensuring that every Georgian has access to quality, affordable health care, and she will work to introduce vocational programs in high schools to create more opportunities for Georgia's students. She'll never stop fighting for the rights of unions.
We're so proud to support Nikki, Ceretta, Bee, Regina, and Ebony in their fight for a more progressive, more inclusive Georgia. But they won't win their races without the support of folks like you.
