3 Stocks Raising Dividends

September’s dividend raises look modest — and reading them right is the
lesson. Over the past few Tuesdays we’ve checked whether a dividend is covered
(in the right currency), read the size of the raise as the board’s most honest
forecast, weighed a payout ratio against the paycheck behind it, and listened
for a pace change against the board’s own habit. Tonight, the tool that keeps
all the others honest: a dividend competes for cash with everything else the
company wants to do. A small raise tells you one of two things. Either the
money isn’t there — that’s PepsiCo and Smucker from four weeks ago, trimming
their raises while they patched leaks — or the money is there and it’s busy:
paying down an acquisition, building rate base, satisfying a regulator. On a
dividend screen, the two look identical. They are opposite investments.
