A Los Angeles News Helicopter Crashed While Covering Another Deadly Accident.
Three People Were Killed.

Aerial journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw died aboard
NewsChopper4. Edy Gutierrez Mejia, 29, was killed on the ground. Federal
investigators are now using the helicopter's final live broadcast as a central
piece of evidence.

A Los Angeles news helicopter crashed Tuesday evening while its crew was
covering a separate deadly traffic collision in Chatsworth, killing the two
people aboard and a third person on the ground.
The helicopter was NewsChopper4, a Eurocopter AS350 B2 operated by Angel City
Air and used to provide aerial reporting for NBC4 Los Angeles and its
Spanish-language sister station Telemundo 52.

THE THREE PEOPLE WHO DIED

01 ELIANA MORENO Aerial journalist who provided live coverage for NBC4 and
Telemundo 52 and was known to viewers as a familiar voice over Southern
California breaking news.

02 GEORGE MARCINIW Veteran helicopter pilot and flight instructor who had
regularly flown with Moreno on aerial assignments since 2023.

03 EDY GUTIERREZ MEJIA A 29-year-old visitor from Guatemala who was on the
ground near the crash site when the helicopter came down.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION ONLY MORENO AND MARCINIW WERE ABOARD THE HELICOPTER.
Gutierrez Mejia was a pedestrian on the ground. He was struck and killed when
the aircraft crashed into a commercial parking area.

TWO TRAGEDIES / TWO HOURS

~5:00 PM SUV HITS METRO BUS A separate collision in Chatsworth kills two
people and sends six others to hospitals.

~5:20 PM NEWSCHOPPER4 LAUNCHES Moreno and Marciniw take off to provide
aerial coverage of the bus crash.

~7:00 PM HELICOPTER CRASHES The aircraft goes down in a parking lot between
commercial buildings and catches fire.
The helicopter was covering the earlier bus collision when contact was lost
shortly before 7 p.m. Witnesses later described the aircraft appearing to sway
and lose altitude before it struck the ground.
That witness information is part of the investigation, but federal
authorities have not determined what caused the aircraft to lose control.

THE INVESTIGATION

MOMENTS. Investigators say the recorded video and audio may be among the most
valuable evidence available because it captured both the aircraft's movement
and sounds from the helicopter immediately before impact.

NTSB investigators recovered the heavily damaged wreckage and moved it to a
secure facility for further examination. The agency is also reviewing
maintenance records, weather information, the pilot's background and additional
surveillance or cellphone video.
Investigators have noted changes in engine sound and warning tones captured
on the recording, but those observations are evidence to be examined — not a
determination of probable cause.

1958 TELECOPTER DEBUT Los Angeles helped pioneer television news from
helicopters when KTLA introduced its “Telecopter” nearly seven decades ago.
Few American cities are as closely associated with airborne television
reporting as Los Angeles. Helicopters have long allowed local stations to
follow wildfires, pursuits, traffic and breaking events across an enormous
metropolitan area.
The Associated Press reports that at least 16 people have been killed in
fatal U.S. news-helicopter crashes since 2000, placing Tuesday's loss within a
small but serious history of accidents involving airborne news crews.

THE HUMAN STORY THE CREW WENT UP TO DOCUMENT ONE TRAGEDY. WITHIN TWO HOURS,
THEIR OWN NEWSROOM WAS COVERING ANOTHER.
NBC4 anchors later had to report the deaths of their own colleagues on air.
Tributes gathered outside the NBC4 and Telemundo 52 studios and near the
helipad from which Moreno and Marciniw regularly departed for assignments.
Mejia's death added another layer to the loss. He had traveled from Guatemala
to Los Angeles and was visiting the city when the helicopter came down.

INVESTIGATION STATUS NO PROBABLE CAUSE HAS BEEN DETERMINED. Early
observations about engine sounds, warnings or aircraft movement remain
investigative evidence. The NTSB has not yet said what caused the crash.

WHAT MATTERS The final broadcast may help explain what happened to
NewsChopper4. For now, investigators have evidence — but not an answer.
