AI media deals overwhelmingly concentrated in anglophone countries

Our new investigation into the AI media landscape revealed that 71% of AI media deals are made with outlets based in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. These agreements between news outlets and tech giants like OpenAI, Perplexity and Google show a serious geographical imbalance in AI infrastructure. This exacerbates existing inequalities in the global information space and makes it harder for certain outlets to access new sources of revenue.

Belarus: four journalists freed, then expelled to Lithuania

Dzmitry Navazhylau, Andrei Aliaksandrau, Kiryl Pazniak and Liudmila Chekina were released ([link removed]) on 16 September alongside other political prisoners as part of negotiations between Belarus and the United States. Yet they were immediately deported to Lithuania — and 17 journalists are still wrongly held behind Belarusian bars.

Iran: new offensive against the press marks fourth anniversary of “Woman, Life, Freedom”

On 8 August, photojournalist Yalda Moaiery, who has covered Iran for 20 years for international outlets such as Le Monde, TIME and El País, was sentenced in absentia by Iranian authorities to 15 years in prison for documenting the US-Israeli offensive. Her case and a new, draconian draft law underscore the ongoing legacy ([link removed]) of the crackdown on journalism that followed the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement in 2022.

Brazil: deluge of AI-driven disinformation as elections approach

AI-generated disinformation is flooding social media three weeks ahead of Brazil’s presidential election. The measures taken to stem this harmful content by the Superior Electoral Court, the judicial institution responsible for safeguarding the integrity of the election, are insufficient ([link removed]) . Just one month before the election, it ordered the immediate removal of “false” and “seriously decontextualised” content, categories that leave social media platforms far too much room for interpretation.

United States: exiled Nicaraguan journalist arrested

Luis Galeano, a journalist exiled from Nicaragua since 2018, has been detained by US immigration authorities. Director of the radio programme “Café con Voz,” he faces proceedings that could put him at serious risk of deportation back to Nicaragua, where he was persecuted and stripped of his citizenship. As he was granted Spanish citizenship in 2025, the Spanish government could intervene ([link removed]) on his behalf.
