Let’s bring you up to speed on what’s happening in the Tar Heel State. Republicans have gone scorched-earth in their efforts to salvage the midterms. Their methods have ranged from rushing through a Trump-ordered racial gerrymander to trying to change vote-by-mail rules just hours before ballots were mailed. It’s clear: The GOP will stop at nothing to hold on to power — even if it means undermining our democracy. But here’s the thing: Voters don’t like these anti-democracy tactics. If we do our jobs to mobilize and educate voters about what’s at stake, these cynical attacks on democracy will backfire.
Look, North Carolina has a history of gerrymandering and dirty tricks. After the 2020 Census, the state passed one of the most extreme gerrymanders in the country. The fair maps movement fought back, and the North Carolina Supreme Court later ruled the map unconstitutional. But that victory was short-lived — just a few months later, with a new conservative majority on the court, they overturned the fair map and allowed for an even worse gerrymander. Just last year, we witnessed North Carolina Republicans attempt to steal an election they lost. They sued to throw out thousands of legally cast ballots in an effort to overturn the election of a pro-democracy justice to the state supreme court. In the end, they failed, but they didn’t concede defeat for six months after the election. This history and the attacks we’re witnessing today are why we’ve identified North Carolina as one of the priority states where we can ADVANCE progress by building and defending an independent state supreme court with justices who are committed to fair representation and the rule of law. This coordinated assault on fair representation isn’t just happening in North Carolina — donate today and let’s do everything we can to shut down these increasing attacks on democracy. Thanks so much, The NDRC Team
