John, Today is the anniversary of one of the most horrific acts of violence in our nation’s history. The 9/11 terrorist attacks shocked the nation, and the world, and tested our resolve like never before. Like so many Americans, I remember where I was so vividly on this day 19 years ago. After hearing of the initial crash, I turned on the news just in time to watch in horror as the second plane crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. At that moment, I knew our nation was under attack, and as a police officer, I immediately headed into work so that I could do whatever was needed to keep our community safe in Arizona. On this day, I remember and honor those who lost their lives in the attack, and also the first responders on the scene who made the ultimate sacrifice when they answered the call — running into those burning buildings to save lives no matter the cost. Those brave men and women risked their own lives to ensure that as many people as possible survived that day. 9/11 forever changed who we are as a nation. We will never forget that day. And we must also never forget that no enemy is capable of dividing us if we commit to each other. We are a nation of people from all backgrounds and walks of life, yet the bond of being an American is unbreakable. We are stronger together. Humbly, Sheriff Paul Penzone
