The Trump Administration is gutting the Endangered Species Act without ever passing a law.

On September 14th, the director of the Fish and Wildlife Service quietly distributed a memo to federal field offices that fundamentally upends half a century of wildlife protection.

Under their new interpretation, killing an endangered species is no longer illegal as long as it is an "accident" during the course of economic activity. If a massive commercial shipping vessel runs over an endangered whale, or a logging company clear-cuts a forest and crushes the roosting bats inside it, the federal government says it doesn't count as a crime because the developers didn't mean to do it.

They are quite literally giving the extraction lobby a "Get Out of Jail Free" card to bulldoze over America's most imperiled wildlife.
