1. Democrats and the Democratic Socialists of America

According to June polling from The Economist and YouGov, just 29 percent of Americans said they would consider voting for a self-identified democratic socialist. Only 23 percent of individuals without a college degree said the same, compared with 40 percent of those with a college degree. AEI’s Ruy Teixeira contends, “That’s the real problem with DSA: not that it will ‘take over,’ but that it’s dragging Democrats away from the brand reinvention they need to win back working-class voters.”

2. Pennsylvanians’ Data Center Doubt

Between December 2025 and July 2026, Pennsylvanians’ support for data centers fell by 12 percentage points, while opposition rose 15 points. The information gap also narrowed, with the share of Pennsylvanians reporting that they had received at least some information about data centers rising by 13 percentage points. AEI’s Sean Trende argues, “This doesn’t look like a case of voters waiting for more information before making up their minds. It looks more like a fast-moving, cross-partisan backlash is brewing among people who understand the issue and regret earlier decisions.”

3. Houthi Control in the Bab al Mandeb Strait

Recent advances have created conditions that would allow the Houthis to threaten shipping more easily. Specifically, the Houthis’ seizure of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and Perim Island in the strait enables them to use a broader range of weapons systems. AEI’s Critical Threats Project and the Institute for the Study of War warn, “Allowing the Houthis to consolidate positions that leave them in range to use tactical weapons against shipping lanes in the Bab al Mandeb is unacceptable for US national security interests.”
