Dear John,
Today marks the 19th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. On this solemn day, we remember the 9/11 heroes and their families, and we honor their bravery and sacrifice.
For seven years following 9/11, NVFS partnered with the Greater Washington Community Foundation and the American Red Cross to support the long-term recovery of individuals and families affected by the terrorist attacks. Through the Survivors’ Fund Project, we provided case management, counseling and financial assistance to over 1,000 people. Read my reflection about 9/11 posted here today. <[link removed]>
Our work in those difficult days exemplified our mission: we supported survivors as they opened their hearts, shared their trauma, and bravely acclimated to their new normal.
I think about that time, and how the stories that were shared and the lessons we learned, informed our responses to the crises that have come after – Hurricane Katrina, government shutdowns, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Once again, we are striving to meet the moment to address the suffering in our community.
Over the last six months, we brought our community together to distribute financial assistance; to provide mental health support, case management, job training; and to set up our first-ever classroom for children in our shelter who are starting the school year virtually. Our staff, who deliver these services with trauma-informed expertise and a heaping amount of compassion, are the frontline heroes making life better for the thousands of families we serve.
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes—from the firefighters who responded to the terrorist attacks 19 years ago, to the doctors and nurses in our hospitals, to the caregivers balancing working and home schooling today.
Our collective memory is our strength and our foundation as we build a community of safety, strength, and possibility for everyone.
In reflection and gratitude,
