During the Fall of 2001, I was completing college and ROTC training. Nobody knew how much the world was about to change.

But everything did after the terror attacks on September 11.

In the midst of our nation's collective fear, grief, and confusion, I decided to enter active duty service and request assignment as a paratrooper, and later as an Army Ranger.

During three combat tours, I saw the bravery of my fellow soldiers who served selflessly and valiantly. And some of them made the ultimate sacrifice.

For me, and so many, this solemn anniversary is a poignant reminder of a promise yet to be fulfilled. Many survivors, first responders, service members, and families have not received the care, support, and benefits they deserve.

The pursuit of justice is personal for me, and I will not stop fighting for expanded access to mental health services, or the continued funding of the Victims Compensation Fund for 9/11 victims, first responders, and families.

The way our nation came together after 9/11 showed our strength and resilience as a nation.

Today I will hold close to me the survivors, and their families, as well as the first responders and service members who ran into the face of danger, regardless of the cost to their own lives. They were with me each day I served in the U.S. Army. Now, I serve in their honor and memory as a U.S. Congressman.
