During the West Ashley stop of the city’s State of Our City tour, Mayor William Cogswell announced that Charleston will sign an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the SCDOT, giving it the power to fix state-owned roads.

The city will also retime every traffic signal in West Ashley to optimize traffic flow. A retiming effort completed on the Calhoun Corridor has improved traffic flow there by ~25%.

"It all comes down to the same goal: making our roads work better for the people who use them every day," said Mayor Cogswell.

The city says it aims to fix 20 to 30 potholes a day and is adding a second repair crew to speed up the work. If you're wondering, "Who's paying for this?" The funds are from extra revenue following increased hotel and business license fees.

Early next year, the city will also launch a dedicated pothole hotline, a direct way to report potholes that need repairing.

Celebrate African-American and Caribbean arts and culture at the MOJA Arts Festival from Thursday, Sept. 24 to Thursday, Oct. 1.

The days-long celebration of African American and Caribbean culture will feature art, music, food, dance, poetry, theater, storytelling, traditional crafts, and family activities.

For the first time, the festival honors the cultural legacies of Barbados, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, and the Gullah Geechee.
