Yesterday, my friend Rep. Thomas Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Today, Speaker Johnson ended the House session early. Instead of conducting a vote on the articles this week as required when Massie invoked House Rule IX, he sent us home and delayed a vote until after the November elections.

This is the kind of cowardice that defines the current administration.

Speaker Johnson knows that Trump and his administration’s policies—including Hegseth’s endless war in Iran—are deeply unpopular. Rather than let members vote, he’s running and hiding.

This is bigger than party politics. Thomas Massie is a Republican. He introduced these articles because he knows Hegseth has violated the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution. Yet Republican leadership adjourned the House before members could even debate or vote on them.

Hegseth helped launch a war against Iran without congressional authorization. He continued that war beyond the limits established by the War Powers Resolution—even after both chambers of Congress directed the administration to end it. He has dismantled safeguards meant to protect civilians, carried out extrajudicial killings, retaliated against Senator Mark Kelly for exercising his free speech, and abused his office to conduct unauthorized military operations around the world.

Thomas Massie and I introduced the first War Powers Resolution to end the Iran war within its first week. We’ve continued our bipartisan push to end the war because accountability cannot depend on which party is in power.

The House must return to session. Members must be allowed to debate and vote on the articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth.

Our Constitution is not optional. The War Powers Resolution is not optional. Congress has a responsibility to exercise its constitutional authority over war and hold the executive branch accountable when it believes that authority has been violated.
