Folks — it's Mallory McMorrow — State Senator, Senate Majority Whip, mom, and fierce defender of Michiganders’ voting rights.
I asked Garlin if I could borrow his list for a few minutes, because I want to tell you why I'm lending my name to this one.
I'll be honest with you: I get these emails too. The all-caps, the countdown clocks, the sense that every single thing is the most urgent thing that has ever happened. I don't like writing them and I don't like reading them. So here’s me just being straight with you about what I see from the inside and how much is on the line.
Almost everything that determines whether an election is free and fair gets decided at the state level. How easy or hard it is to register. How many days you have to vote early. Whether your absentee ballot gets counted or thrown out on a technicality. Who certifies the results.
Michigan voters wrote a lot of that into our constitution ourselves — early voting, no-reason absentee, drop boxes in every community. I've spent my time in the legislature passing laws defending our vote and expanding access to the ballot box as a member of the Senate Elections & Ethics committee. But a right on paper is only worth as much as the person administering it, and the Secretary of State is that person.
Here's what I keep thinking about heading into this November and into 2028, when Michigan will be the fifth state on the DNC presidential nominating calendar.
The pressure is coming. It will come as a demand for our voter file. It will come as a lawsuit, or a threat to funding, or a phone call asking someone to find a few thousand votes. We have already watched the Trump administration test what happens when it leans on state officials, and we have already watched how much depends on whether one person holds. Michigan needs a Secretary of State who will stand tall — not one who will bend the knee.
I've watched Garlin Gilchrist work for the past eight years as LG. He was a software engineer before he was Lieutenant Governor, and that matters more than it sounds — he understands the machinery, not just the politics of it. He's made protecting your personal data from federal overreach a centerpiece of this campaign, which tells you he sees exactly what's coming.
This is a close race that most voters don't know is on the ballot. That's a dangerous combination.
Garlin's team is trying to raise $5,000 before midnight. I don't ask this often, and I'm asking now: if you can put in $25, or $10, or whatever is easy for you, it goes toward reaching people who don't yet know this race exists. [[link removed]]
