UNITED updates September 2020

After a hot, slumberous summer, we come back with greetings from UNITED!

It has been a while since you may have heard form us. While we did indeed give ourselves a short break, we are back rejuvenated and revitalized, ready with a fresh set of activities.

We’re excited to have you join us!

NEWS FROM UNITED

Upcoming conference

In just a few weeks, we will be hosting our virtual conference:

On the 1st and 2nd October, UNITED will be hosting a conference online, covering the topics of youth, women, refugees and minorities, NGOs, and intersectionality. This topic will respond to the context of COVID-19, and how the virus has impacted each.

This conference will host 2 workshops, each of which will focus on labour, mental health/self-care, and discrimination.  The first workshop will collect field experiences, and the second will explore good practices on how to share it, what we can do, and how we can prevent further issues.

A detailed agenda, as well as a programme, will follow in the next few weeks!

Solidarity Statement

Like everyone else, we followed the distressing news from Belarus with bated breath. The reports from our Belarusian friends about the riot police, the torturing of the detained, the rubber bullets and the grenades, left us shocked and deeply saddened. We recognize this as an unprecedented level of violence in the country.

In light of this, we released a statement of solidarity calling on the Belarusian authorities to respect the rights of all citizens to peaceful demonstrations and end the detention and arrests.

We believe that anyone detained for peacefully protesting, as well as prisoners of conscience should be immediately released and people’s grievances heard.

We will remain UNITED with the protestors and activists in Belarus.

NEWS FROM THE NETWORK

The Fare network is an umbrella organisation that brings together individuals, informal groups and organisations driven to combat inequality in football and use the sport as a means for social change.

This year, 41 organisations have been awarded Fare grants in four continents to implement projects to help racial equality using Black Lives Matter football grants from the Fare network.

More about the grants here.

In light of the devastating news about Camp Moria in Greece, where a fire has rendered 12,000 homeless and displaced, we ask you to support our friends working on the ground to document, support, and help refugees stuck in the island of Lesbos. More about the organisation here.
