Dorian Is Coming! Hospital Vote Rescheduled

As you are by now well aware, Hurricane Dorian, now a Cat 2 storm, will visit us tonight and will hang around for at least a couple of days. I'm not going to repeat the standard hurricane prep advice, but you should now be well along in your hurricane routine.  We will start to get serious wind and rain today (Wednesday) and the storm is currently projected to pass within 25 miles of New Hanover beaches.

The New Hanover County County Board of Commissioners was scheduled to vote Tuesday on the controversial "Resolution of Intent to Sell" the county-owned New Hanover Regional Medical Center. That vote is now scheduled to be held at the Commission's meeting on September 16th at 4 pm.

The vote will arguably be one of the most important votes in a generation.  You can attend in person at the Training Room at Government center or watch it live on NHCTV.com and probably also on cable news channels.

Good News: One Step Closer To Fair Districts

A Three Judge Panel in Wake County yesterday threw out gerrymandered districts across the state and ordered the legislature to draw new districts in two weeks. Taking no chances on the legislature's good faith, the Court will also appoint a Special Master who will conduct the redistricting in the (likely) event that the NCGA cannot bring itself to draw fair maps. If all goes according to plan we will have new districts in October.

You can download the Court's opinion here (357 pages).  In the event that you don't want to download and read the entire opinion, you can download the Court's Order and Injunction here (11 pages).  If you want to read the Courts analysis of New Hanover's House Districts, you can download it here (6 pages).  If you want to read about New Hanover's Senate Districts, you can do that here (5 pages).

The CD 9 Vote Continues Despite The Hurricane

While the hurricane sits over New Hanover, the future of our country is being decided in Congressional District 9, where Dan McCready (pictured) is running against Dan Bishop, author of the disastrous HB2.  McCready's  race has wide significance, because it is being viewed as a bellwether of Democratic fortunes in 2020. Recent polls show the two Dans in a statistical tie, and the race will be decided by whose voters show up in a low-turnout special election. Preliminary results suggest that Democrats are turning out in larger numbers than Republicans. Still, this is an election that will likely be decided by a couple of hundred votes.

We can still make a difference as long as cellphones are charged and flashlights work:

Texting: Outvote is a GOTV tool which lets you send texts to remind voters to vote. Use this link: https://campaigns.outvote.io/dan-mccready

Critical last minute GOTV canvassing:

Canvassing in Bladen County https://www.mobilize.us/mccreadyforcongress/event/93650/ and https://www.mobilize.us/mccreadyforcongress/event/107644/

Personally, I am going to try the texting tool and drive to Bladen County on September 9th for canvassing and a hamburger at Melvin's.

What Hurricane? Tillis Stands By as Trump Loots Disaster Funds

Just so you don't forget, the guy pictured here is your Senator, and he didn't stand up for North Carolina when President Trump looted disaster relief funds to fund his assault on immigrants at the southern border.

That’s not the first time Tillis’ spineless decisions have hurt disaster preparation and recovery. When he was Speaker of the House, Senator Tillis signed a law preventing the state from considering up-to-date climate science on sea-level rise when making policies.

The happy news is that he is down in the polls and has several credible Democratic opponents.

2019 Unity Banquet Tickets Available Through September 8

The Unity Banquet sold out in early August thanks to the efforts of our excellent volunteers and to our keynote speaker, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley. However, we were able to negotiate an expansion of our footprint at the convention center which enables us to accommodate everyone. Ticket sales will remain open till September 8. The Unity Banquet is on September 21 at 6 pm.
