And a summer of reading turned into a deeper understanding of our democracy.

All of the books on our summer reading list made one thing clear: democracy works only when every eligible voter can participate and every community has a fair chance to be heard. From voter suppression to gerrymandering, each book shows how rules that seem technical or routine can determine whose voices count.

Minority Rule by Ari Berman shows how political parties and institutions can hold onto power without winning majority support. He connects the history of the founding era to today’s fights over voting rights, election administration, the courts, and fair representation — all central to whether a democracy works for “we the people.”

One Person, No Vote by Dr. Carol Anderson traces the long history of voter suppression and the systems used to silence voters. Its core lesson is that barriers to voting are not accidental: they are choices that can be changed — and challenged — when people organize. 

RatF**ed by David Daley exposes how partisan voting map-drawers can manipulate district lines to lock in political power even when election results do not reflect the will of voters. Fair representation starts with maps that keep communities together and allow voters to choose their leaders — not the other way around.
