They say most people don't start paying attention to elections until after Labor Day. Election Day is just 49 days away now. There are many ways to evaluate candidates: positions on the issues, experience, which one is taller (and yes that’s a factor in who wins). At the Secular Coalition we are always interested in secular candidates who are trying to become, or stay in office as, secular legislators.
If you are interested in those candidates too, I encourage you to check out the candidates recommended by the Center for Freethought Equality, which is the advocacy arm of the American Humanist Association, which is one of our coalition members.
You can find a list of candidates CFE endorses by state for federal and state offices and the seven they are most focused on helping, their Secular Seven. “Endorsed candidates shared the policy values of the humanist and atheist community with regard to: protecting the strict separation of church and state, addressing the climate crisis, advancing human rights and civil liberties, and ensuring the health, safety and dignity of our communities through evidence-based and humane public policies."
For help with voter registration, mail-in ballots, polling locations, and much more, visit SCA's Secular America Votes site. The Supreme Court seems to have had the final word that the mail-in ballot system can’t be tampered with by the Postal Service at the request of the President, so you may still be able to get a mail-in ballot depending on what state you live in. Early in-person voting starts soon in many jurisdictions, a good way to avoid any election day problems.

If you read my last installment about the Congressional hearing where the Thomas Paine memorial bill was on the agenda, you might be pleased to learn that today the same committee voted to approve the bill by unanimous consent and make it eligible for a vote by the full House.
Unfortunately the House is taking the next seven weeks off because either they have solved all the nation’s problems or the Republican majority decided that the best way to solve those problems is spend the next seven weeks campaigning for reelection. Then they could come back and solve them in November and December, apparently.
There should be a path for the Thomas Paine bill to get passed into law in December in a package of other noncontroversial bills. This early church-state separation champion is getting closer to a memorial and a statue in Washington, DC. Even the pigeons are getting excited!
