Fostering Policy Discussions on AI Development and Human Dignity

As the development of artificial intelligence continues at an exponential rate, I sat down with Politico to give an in-depth interview on the need to responsibly put guardrails on AI development and protect the dignity of human work, connection, and soul. In the wake of serious concerns raised by AI developers about the rapidly accelerating pace of AI capabilities and the possibility that the models will act in contrast to basic human interests, I believe policymakers must wrestle with the implications of this civilizational-altering technology. There is also a profoundly moral question we must address, in that AI has no human soul – therefore delegation of our societal responsibilities to it risks the destruction of that which makes us human. There are also serious concerns around AI infrastructure, particularly data centers. In May, I introduced H.R. 9019, the POWER Act, to require robust public reporting on AI data center power and water usage, to ensure that locals are informed about development in their communities. The time is now for policymakers and the American public to have frank and serious discussions on the future of our society, the dignity we place on work and human achievement, and ultimately on what guardrails we ought to place on AI.

Roy on AI Development: “Our predisposition as free market conservatives should be that the market is going to produce the best and most efficient and most effective solutions for all of these problems. But the people that are running the industries, they owe us an understanding that they’re doing that. Government has a role to have hearings. Government has a role to raise questions. Government has a role to maybe demand certain levels of safety or security, or maybe government has a role to demand some certain level of escape valve.”

The 25th Anniversary of the 9/11 Terror Attacks and Remembrance of the Fallen

Friday, September 11th, 2026, marked 25 years since we lost 2,977 Americans in the worst terrorist attack in our country’s history. From New York City to the Pentagon and the fields of Pennsylvania, our republic was attacked by vile Islamists who wished to strike fear into our hearts, but were instead met with the unshakeable bravery, unity, and resolve of the American people. As many Americans took time to remember their loved ones who lost their lives on 9/11 or in the War on Terror that followed, please know my family’s prayers are always with you. We shall never forget.

Team Roy was honored to attend the 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Schreiner University in Kerrville to mark 25 years since we lost some many loved ones. The color guard was displayed, the national anthem was beautifully sung by the Schreiner Institute ROTC, and the Schreiner University President, Charlie McCormick, offered a moving keynote address. My thanks go out to Schreiner University for such a moving and solemn remembrance ceremony.

President Trump Announces Additional Disaster Relief for July 2026 Flood Recovery

After my letter to President Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requesting additional flood recovery assistance, President Trump has officially announced the July 2026 flooding in Central Texas as a Major Disaster Declaration. Roland W. Jackson has been named the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas. Additional designations may be made if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments. FEMA has approved its Public Assistance program, including assistance for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities, for 19 counties: Bandera, Crockett, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, La Salle, Mason, Maverick, Menard, Real, Sutton, Uvalde, Val Verde, and Zavala counties. Officials continue to review disaster damage information self-reported by Texans through TDEM's Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) damage survey. Impacted Texans are encouraged to submit information about damage to homes or businesses caused by the July storms and flooding by visiting damage.tdem.texas.gov. These details are vital to help officials identify impacted areas and connect Texans with resources.

Academy Nomination Deadline Approaching

The portal for students wishing to apply for a nomination to one of the four U.S. Military Academies is open on our website and can be found here. Students interested in applying should check out the documents required for a nomination and submit them by the deadline of September 25th, 2026.  Students graduating from high school in 2027 and college students who have not passed their 23rd birthday by July 1st of the year they are entering are eligible to apply.  If you applied last year, please contact Anne Overby about how to reapply. Congressional App Challenge Applications Open

The House of Representatives is inviting students across the country to show off their skills and design their very own app for the Congressional App Challenge. This program showcases the talent of American middle and high school students and can lead to real federal adoption of successful app proposals. Students in the Texas 21st District can apply here. The application deadline is October 26.
