Friend,
Happy September!
The end of summer is always a bittersweet time for me. I’ll miss the days spent outside with close friends and family and the opportunities to meet Richmond residents at picnics, parks, and out and about. But the beginning of September also marks one of my favorite times of the year: back to school!
Kids in Richmond are heading back to school this week, and I can’t wait for them to return to the classroom and start hitting the books. I’m a huge believer in the power of education: I attribute much of the success I’ve found in my own life to the opportunity I had to pursue a great education.
That’s why I’m so proud of the work the Richmond City Council and I have done to make Richmond Public Schools even better this school year. Since I took office we have:
- Invested $37 million more into public education;
- Expanded after school programming so that by next year, every elementary and middle school student will have access to free, high-quality after school activities;
- And begun construction on three new schools that will be open by next fall.
These new investments are going to ensure that every child in Richmond has access to a first-class, quality education that can set them up for success for the rest of their life.
Good luck to all the teachers, students, and parents this school year -- make the most of every opportunity and have fun back in the classroom!
Thanks,
Mayor Stoney
