Dear John,
We’ve reached a pivotal moment in the fight to protect Bristol Bay, Alaska from the disastrous Pebble Mine.
The mine threatens one of the last and largest homes of wild salmon with potentially millions of gallons of toxic water. This water is loaded with lead, arsenic, and more.
Progressive Members of Congress and communities across Alaska are fighting Pebble Mine -- but they’re going up against Trump and his mining industry cronies. This is a true David vs. Goliath battle, and we need your help to keep it going, John.

More than 65 percent of all Alaskans, 80 percent of Bristol Bay residents -- including Native people -- and more than 85 percent of commercial fisherman strongly oppose Pebble Mine. After all, it would devastate Bristol Bay’s ecosystem, the fishing economy, and local communities.
The mine could generate more than 10 billion tons of dangerous waste, wipe out 90 miles of salmon streams and pollute more than 5,000 acres of wetlands, ponds, and lakes. It would likely plummet the salmon population -- catastrophically impacting local communities and the last great wild sockeye salmon fishery.
In June, the House of Representatives was considering a new measure to protect Bristol Bay. Friends of the Earth members like you pitched in with last-minute messages to Congress and donations -- and the measure passed! This shows that when you and I work together, we can stop the mining industry’s destruction.
But now the EPA is reconsidering actions it put in place to stop Pebble Mine. Once again, Bristol Bay is under threat. So I’m asking you for help once again.

We’re going up against huge corporations and their powerful cronies in the Trump administration. But with Friends of the Earth Members like you at our side, I know we can win this fight and protect Bristol Bay.
We have a comprehensive plan to stop Pebble Mine:
- We’ve mobilized people like you to send tens of thousands of comments to the EPA, urging it not to greenlight the project. Your messages were so compelling that they broke through anti-environmental extremist Scott Pruitt’s leadership and convinced the EPA to not approve it. Now, the EPA is reconsidering that decision -- but with your help, we can still prevent the mine’s construction.
- We pressured the giant financier First Quantum Minerals to stem the financial backing for the mine. First Quantum responded to pressure from Friends of the Earth campaigners and activists. It decided not to provide any financing for Pebble Mine -- following in the footsteps of other major financial interests.
- We’re urging the Army Corps of Engineers to reject a crucial permit for this disastrous project. After the Army Corps opened a public comment period that was far too short to meaningfully consider public input, more than 31,000 Friends of the Earth members like you spoke out to lengthen it. We then worked with leaders in Congress to echo your comments. We got the comment period extended -- and then mobilized activists like you to drive more than 46,000 comments to stop the mine once and for all.
- We’re leveraging the federal government’s budget process to demand the rejection of Pebble Mine through the measure the House recently passed. If Congress ties protections for Bristol Bay to must-pass budget legislation, the Army Corps will temporarily not be allowed to permit the mine.
You know that when we work together, we can move mountains. You and I have stopped or slowed down fossil fuel projects around the country -- from the Williams Pipeline in New York to Trump’s massive plan to open nearly all our oceans to new drilling.
Imagine what we can do in Alaska if we all work together. But we have to act fast -- before Congress votes on protections for Bristol Bay.
