Trump's political machine just made its opening move, and it's uglier than anyone predicted.
A brand-new super PAC – created two weeks ago, run by the same people who run Trump's main operation – dumped roughly $21 million into attack ads against Democrats in the exact battlegrounds that will decide control of Congress. Behind it sits more than $400 million in cash, and Trump is bragging he'll spend half a billion to keep Republicans in power. Elon Musk's PAC piled on another $120 million this month.
Understand what that money is for. It's not to persuade anyone. Republicans know they can't win on their record – gutting health care, rigging maps, handing billionaires everything they ask for while families drown. So the plan is simpler and more cynical. Bury the airwaves in sludge, make politics so toxic that the voters they've already written off just stay home, and let a shrunken electorate hand them Congress.
If they keep the House, there is no check left on any of it. No oversight, no subpoenas, no floor to how far they'll go for two more years.
