As part of our effort to keep the Swing Left community informed on all of our target races, today we want to take a deeper dive into the U.S. Senate race in Texas.
With a uniquely appealing Democratic candidate and a scandal-ridden, unpopular Republican opponent, this race represents Democrats’ best opportunity in years to win a statewide race in Texas.
Recent polling numbers even show Democrat James Talarico with a lead over Republican Ken Paxton:
But while these poll numbers look great for Talarico, a story broke this weekend that a Republican PAC has booked more than $51 million in ad spending for Ken Paxton.
This brings Paxton’s TV spending budget to more than $74 million in reserved advertising between now and Election Day, all booked by outside GOP groups—not including millions that will be spent on filling the airwaves by both Donald Trump’s super PAC and Elon Musk’s.
This spending is in sharp contrast to just a few weeks ago, when Talarico had a 7-to-1 spending advantage over Paxton.
It’s clear that Republicans are panicking about the strength of Talarico’s campaign, and as a result, they’re doubling down to outspend Talarico on TV. That’s another reason the work we’re doing with volunteers on the ground in states like Texas, to contact and turn out voters through Ground Truth, matters.
Ground Truth is Swing Left’s innovative, volunteer-led deep-canvassing program that aims to have real, in-depth conversations with voters ahead of Election Day to help Democratic campaigns better understand the voters they need to reach to win.
Because this work is ultimately about winning elections. Every conversation is an opportunity to listen to voters who traditional campaigns might miss, build trust, and persuade more people to vote for Democrats. These conversations could help determine who controls Congress, and whether there is a check on Trump.
